The small, yet culturally diverse region of Fruili-Venezia Giulia borders the countries of Austria, Slovenia and Croatia. The city of Trieste is considered the most “middle-European” of Italy’s cities and enjoys a unique literary heritage symbolized by James Joyce, Jan Morris and Umberto Saba.

Near Trieste is Miramare Castle, built by the Hapsburg Emperor, Franz Joseph of Austria, in the 19th century. The world’s largest accessible cave, the Borgo Grotta Gigante can be found near Carso.

Visit Aquileia to see Roman remains and early Christian art. Grado, and Lignano Sabbiadoro along the Adriatic Sea, offer plentiful sunbathing opportunities.
